I’ll be honest, there was a time I thought experience alone was enough.
After a few years in procurement, managing vendors, handling negotiations and meeting targets, it felt like I had things under control.
But then things started changing. New tools, new expectations, more strategic responsibilities… and suddenly, what used to work wasn’t enough anymore.
That’s when I realized: in procurement, standing still is actually falling behind.

Understanding the Shift
Procurement today is not what it used to be. It’s no longer just operational, it’s strategic, data-driven and deeply connected to business outcomes.
For me, that shift came with a simple realization: if I wanted to stay relevant and grow, I had to keep learning.
✨ 1. I was comfortable with manual processes and basic tools until I had to work with digital procurement systems and data analytics. It felt like starting from scratch.
Tip: Identify emerging skills in procurement like data analysis, digital tools or strategic sourcing and start learning them gradually.
✨ 2. I used to hesitate during strategy discussions because I wasn’t fully confident in my insights. But as I gained new knowledge, I found myself contributing more and speaking up.
Tip: Don’t wait until you feel ‘ready’. Start small, apply what you learn and build confidence over time.

✨ 3. Taking the time to improve my skills allowed me to take on more complex projects and responsibilities that I would have avoided before.
Tip: View upskilling as an investment. Even a short course or certification can position you for bigger roles.
✨ 4. When new systems were introduced, some people resisted the change, while others embraced it and quickly became go-to experts.
Tip: Be curious about new tools and systems. Instead of resisting change, explore how it can make your work easier.
Looking back, upskilling wasn’t just something I needed, it was something I owed to myself. It helped me grow, adapt and stay confident in a constantly evolving field.
