Many supply chains only look ‘organized’ on the surface.
Orders are placed, suppliers respond and deliveries eventually arrive.
But the moment something goes wrong, everything becomes unclear: Where is the delay coming from? Who is responsible? What is the real impact?
I’ve been in situations where we only discovered a supply issue after it had already affected operations.
That’s when I learned a hard truth, if you don’t have visibility, you’re not really in control.

Understanding Supply Chain Visibility
Supply chain visibility means having real-time or near real-time insight into every stage of your procurement and supply process from sourcing to delivery.
From experience, visibility doesn’t just help you react faster, it helps you prevent problems before they escalate.
✔️ You Can’t Manage What You Can’t See: A shipment is delayed, but procurement only finds out when operations escalate complaints due to stock shortages.
Action Point: Map your end-to-end supply chain. Identify key touchpoints and ensure you have tracking or reporting mechanisms at each stage.
✔️ Improve Communication Across the Chain: Suppliers have updates on delays, but that information doesn’t reach procurement or internal stakeholders in time.
Action Point: Create structured communication channels with suppliers. Establish clear expectations for updates on production, shipping and potential risks.

✔️ Use Data, Not Assumptions: A team assumes delays are caused by suppliers, but data later shows internal approval bottlenecks were the real issue.
Action Point: Use dashboards or tracking tools to monitor order status, supplier performance and delivery timelines.
✔️ Strengthen Supplier Transparency: A supplier only shares delivery dates but not production progress, making it difficult to anticipate delays.
Action Point: Work with suppliers to share key milestones, production start, completion, dispatch and transit updates.
Supply chain visibility is not just a reporting function, it’s a strategic advantage. When you can see clearly, you can plan better, respond faster and reduce uncertainty across the entire procurement process.
