Procurement and Sustainability: A Personal Mission to Make a Difference

I remember working on a sourcing decision where we had scaled down to two suppliers who both seemed ideal for the job.

One offered the lowest price, while the other; although slightly higher priced, showcased a much stronger commitment to ethical sourcing and environmentally responsible practices.

At first, choosing the cheaper option felt like the obvious decision. After all, procurement is often measured by cost savings.

But I paused and asked myself: Is procurement only about spending less, or is it also about creating lasting value?

After evaluating the long-term impact, I recommended the supplier with stronger sustainability practices.

While the initial cost was slightly higher, the decision reduced potential risks, strengthened our reputation and aligned with our organization's ESG goals. More importantly, it reinforced the idea that every procurement decision has an impact beyond the balance sheet.

Sustainability isn't just a trend or a corporate buzzword. It's about making thoughtful decisions that benefit businesses, communities and the environment; while still delivering value.

As procurement professionals, we have the opportunity to influence positive change through the suppliers we choose and the standards we uphold. Every purchasing decision is a chance to make a difference.

So, the next time you're evaluating suppliers, ask yourself: Are you only buying for today, or are you investing in a more sustainable future?
