Building a Resilient Procurement Function in Uncertain Times

Sometime ago, during a period of extreme market volatility, I faced a situation that tested every ounce of our procurement resilience. A key supplier suddenly experienced a production halt, threatening to derail critical deliveries.
Panic could have set in, but thankfully it didn’t.
Because we had invested in building relationships, diversifying suppliers and maintaining clear communication channels, we were able to pivot quickly.
We tapped into secondary suppliers we had nurtured quietly over time and leveraged data to anticipate alternative sourcing options.
What could have been a crisis became a lesson in resilience.

From that experience, I realized that resilience isn’t just about having backup suppliers. It’s about embedding flexibility, foresight and trust into the procurement function. Here are a few strategies I’ve leaned on:
✨ Diversify Suppliers: Never put all your eggs in one basket. A mix of local and international suppliers can protect against sudden disruptions.
✨ Invest in Relationships: Transparent communication builds trust, which can buy you precious time in critical situations.

✨ Invest in Data & Analytics: Understanding your supply chain’s weak points allows you to anticipate issues before they escalate.
✨Empower Your Team: Equip your procurement professionals with the skills and autonomy to make decisions when uncertainty hits.
Sometimes, it’s in the toughest moments that a procurement team shows its true value and that’s a lesson I carry with me every day.
