The hardest No I Have Ever Said: Upholding Ethics in Procurement

In procurement, saying "no" can feel heavier than any "yes" we hand out. But sometimes, that "no" defines who you are as a professional.
A few years ago, I was reviewing a proposal from a long-standing supplier, someone I had trusted for years. Their price was competitive, their delivery timelines perfect, and the temptation to approve was strong. But as I dug into the numbers, I noticed inconsistencies that suggested corners had been cut.

My gut told me this wasn’t just a small oversight; it was a compromise of ethics. I remember sitting in that meeting, the supplier across the table, expecting approval. And I said: “No, we cannot proceed with this.”
The room went silent. The supplier was visibly frustrated. Some of my colleagues thought I was overreacting. But integrity isn’t always popular. Months later, the same supplier returned with full transparency, improved practices, and a stronger partnership emerged not because it was convenient, but because the right thing was done.

That day reinforced a core lesson in procurement: Upholding ethics isn’t just about rules, it’s about building trust, protecting your organization, and making decisions that your future self can respect.
Saying “no” is never easy, but sometimes it’s the most powerful choice you can make.
